I decided to share one of my favorite flies for predator fishing. I have been tying this fly for many years. It catches trout, char, perch, taimen, grayling and other aggressive predators of different sizes. They love a large, realistic silhouette that plays beautifully in the water.

The Zonker Streamer for fly fishing (Fly tying streamer zonker) remains an excellent choice for fishing in fast currents, lakes or the sea. The materials are very simple, and you can buy them at any large fly fishing shop. You need a little time, and you will have an excellent, catchy streamer in your fly box.

How to Fish and Retrieve the Zonker Streamer
How to Fish the Zonker Streamer
Understanding how to tie the Zonker Streamer is only half the battle. You need to know how to present it properly to the fish. When hunting for trout or perch, I use an aggressive “strip-and-pause” retrieve. The arctic fox tail and rabbit Zonker strip work great both during movement and during pauses, imitating an injured minnow or sculpin. This sudden change in movement triggers an instinctive attack from the predator.
5 Critical Lessons for Perfect Streamer Tying Results
To make your Zonker Streamer perfect every time, remember these 5 critical tips:
- Use barbless hooks to protect wild fish populations and ensure a clean hookset. Do not make the body of Senyos Fusion Dub Emerald too bulky; a slim profile cuts through the water faster.
- Securely fix the Zonker strip with Soft Wire 33 wire so the rabbit fur does not twist during long casts.
- Add just enough Flash to the arctic fox tail to catch reflections in low light, but not spook wary trout.
- Watch the full video tutorial carefully to see the exact material proportions.
- Still need ready-made flies or materials? Do not go to the river unprepared. You can find custom flies from me. When traveling to Serbia, Bosnia or Montenegro, check the fishing rules and licensing.
